Bangladesh has achieved silver and bronze medals in the recently concluded European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). Edward M Kennedy (EMK) Center arranged an experience sharing session with the girls from Bangladesh who aced this victory in the prestigious competition on April 28.
EGMO is an international mathematical competition. The participants are asked to solve six mathematical problems for a maximum score of 7 points each, and a maximum total value of 42 points. Regarded as the largest mathematical competition for girls, the event witnessed the participation of 213 girls from 55 countries this year. The test was conducted on two consecutive days, and the participants solved three problems each day.
In this programme, EMK Center brought team Bangladesh consisting of Nujhat Ahmed Disha from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Rayan Bintay Mostafa from Natore Government Girls' High School, Arifa Alam from Tikatuli Kamrunnesa Government Girls' High School, Dhaka, and Safa Tasnim, from Government PN Girls' High School, Rajshahi. Among them, Disha and Rayan won one silver and one bronze medal for the team respectively. The team was selected on the basis of two preliminary tests and the performances in last year's Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad (BdMO), Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad and the National Math Camp.
The event featured Ipshita Bonhi Upoma, lecturer at BRAC University and academic coordinator at BdMO, Mahbub Majumdar, professor and dean of school of Data and Sciences, BRAC University and national coach of the BdMO Team, and ASM Mainuddin Monem, deputy managing director of Abdul Monem Limited and sponsor of the EGMO team. They shared their experience and vision with the students. Ipshita Bonhi Upoma explained the competition process, planning, progress and answered all the queries asked by the attendees.
"Rather than for winning competition and admission, we have to practice maths with passion and enthusiasm from our own interest," said Arifa Alam.
The team leader, Ipshita Bonhi Upoma remarked, "We had to go through a rigorous selection process to find the best math enthusiasts from the country. Then we arranged camp to train and prepare them for European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad. I am grateful to my team for the valuable effort and contribution."
