SUST VC asked to withdraw indecent remarks about JU female students

A legal notice has been sent to Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Vice-Phancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed demanding to withdraw his indecent and derogatory remarks made recently against the female students of the Jahangirnagar University.

Khademul Islam, a lawyer working in the Dhaka Judge Court and also a former student of the Jahangirnagar University (JU), sent the notice on Thursday.

Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed has been asked to withdraw the remarks and to seek unconditional apology over his fault within 72 hours of receiving the notice.

The notice said in response to the demand for keeping open all the night the ladies' hall at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, the vice-chancellor of the university made indecent and insulting remarks about the female students of Jahangirnagar University, another reputed educational institution of the country, totally irrelevantly.

It also read, “According to the reports published in different media outlets and audio clip spread through the different social media, vice-chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed said, ‘No one wants to marry Jahangirnagar's female students easily. Because, they roam around all the night.”

The notice said the VC's remarks were indecent, insulting, unconstitutional and an extreme impediment to women’s education.

“The female students of the Jahangirnagar University are performing their duties with distinction at different levels of the state after completing graduation. They are teaching in different universities and even in Shahjalal University with good reputation. Therefore, through the above remarks, the SUST VC has utterly humiliated not only the JU female students but also the entire university family,” also read the notice.

Therefore, the SUST VC has been asked to withdraw his derogatory statement and to seek unconditional apology within 72 hours of receiving the notice. Otherwise, proper legal action will be taken against him, the notice also said.
