Stocks end higher; DSEX crosses 5,200-mark again

Stocks posted marginal gain on Thursday, the last trading session before nine-day Eid vacation, with key index crossed the 5,200-mark after one month.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 5,201, gaining 14.22 points or 0.27 per cent, after remaining flat in the previous day.

Market analysts said some investors were active on sector specific shares based on earnings declaration just ahead of nine-day long Eid-ul-Azha vacation amid post-Eid positive expectations.

Trading and official activities on the bourses will remain closed from August 9 to August 17, including weekly and government holidays.

Two other indices also finished slightly higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 0.75 point to finish at 1,837 and the DSES (Shariah) index gained 2.23 points to settle at 1,192.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.10 billion, which was 8.68 per cent lower than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 4.49 billion.

A total number of 100,879 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 97.91 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market-cap of the DSE also rose to Tk 3,866 billion on Thursday, from Tk 3,852 billion in the previous session.

The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 352 issues traded, 228 closed higher, 63 ended lower and 63 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

United Power topped the turnover chart with shares worth Tk 273 million changing hands.

The other turnover leaders were Khulna Power, JMI Syringes, Grameenphone (GP) and Fortune Shoes.

SEML Lecture Equity Management Fund was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 10 per cent while United Air was the day’s worst loser, slumping by 6.25 per cent.

The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, also closed marginally higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – advancing 44 points to settle at 15,896 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX –gaining 27 points to finish at 9,660.

Here too, the gainers beat the losers as 144 issues ended higher, 74 closed lower and 39 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse traded 5.53 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than 168 million in turnover.
