Claiming that the ruling party has no popularity, BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Friday said Awami League will face dire consequences if a fair election is held.

"The government has got panicked as the country's people don't support it. Awami League will be thrown into dustbins if a fair election is held," he said.

Mosharraf came up with the comment while speaking at a milad mahfil arranged by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal at BNP's Nayapaltan central office seeking its chairperson Khaleda Zia's early recovery.

He said the Prime Minister and other ministers are making unguarded remarks about bringing back BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman from the UK only out of their 'fear' of losing power and facing public wrath.

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said the government will not be able to pursue the UK to deport Tarique at any cost as their country's law does not permit it since he took political asylum there.

He said the UK will only allow Tarique to return to Bangladesh if he tells the British Home Office that a suitable atmosphere is created for his safe return.

"We would like to say Tarique Rahman will surely return home like a hero when the country's people will want it," the BNP leader added.

He renewed their party's demand for releasing Khaleda from jail so that she can receive better treatment by her personal physicians. "Our leader has been kept in an abandoned building of the jail where her physical condition is gradually deteriorating. We demand the government to release her immediately," he said.

The BNP leader also said it will not be possible to hold credible and inclusive national election until Khaleda is released from jail.

He also urged the government to release their chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail as the first condition for holding the next polls in a fair manner and ensuring a level-playing field, reports UNB.
