Old Dhaka building collapse: Rescuers find another body

Rescuers recovered the body of another man from the rubble of a two-storied building that caved in on Wednesday in Patuatuli area of Old Dhaka.

The body was retrieved around midnight, said Fire Service Control Room Duty Officer Rasel Shikder.

Locals said the victims were banana traders residing on the first floor of the abandoned building for several years now. They used the ground floor as a storeroom, reports UNB.

Rescue was called off around 1:00am on Thursday after the recovery of the second body, the fire service official said.

The building's rooftop caved in completely while the first floor ceiling collapsed partially around 1:23pm on Wednesday. Three fire-fighting units conducted the rescue operation.

However, the identity of the victims could not be ascertained yet.

Quoting locals, Kotwali Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Saidur Rahman said that they suspect the victims were banana traders Jahidul Islam, 50, and his son Shafiqul Islam, 17.
