The next government should formulate an effective and realistic child development plan, said a network of non-governmental organisations on Sunday.

The election manifestos of several political parties ahead of the 11th parliamentary election highlighted the importance of rights and protection of children.

The National Children's Task Force (NCTF), Save the Children and Plan International said this in a joint statement.

"Whatever party or coalition government is formed through the polls, they should formulate an effective and realistic child development plan," it said.

"The plan should be based on the opinion of everyone by giving utmost importance to child protection and rights issues and ensure its implementation."

The organisations hoped that children would not be used in election campaigns.

This would reveal their sincerity about the commitments made in the manifestos, reads the statement.

Buro Bangladesh, another non-governmental organisation (NGO), stated that the manifestos should have a clear vision focusing on the activities of the NGOs that work for marginalised people.

It, for instance, said political parties could have focused on the issues about what steps the government would take in terms of ensuring governance in NGOs.

They should also spotlight on how the activities of such organisations could be coordinated more with the government, the statement noted.
