Move to introduce special trains for transporting sacrificial animals

The Bangladesh Railway (BR) is planning to introduce special trains for transporting sacrificial animals to Dhaka and Chattogram from different districts of western and northern zones.

Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon disclosed this at a press conference at Rail Bhaban on Tuesday in presence of Rail Secretary Mohammad Selim Reza, BR Director General Mohammad Shamsuzzaman.

He said the special train will be operated upon demand placed from the districts of selling animals.

The BR had transported sacrificial animals in sevens trains only in 2008 from Dewanganj bazaar to Kamlapur station but stopped it due to want of demand.

“We will provide service in the transportation of animals to be sacrificed if the traders from the districts of selling place demand,” the minister told the reporters without giving any date.

He said the date and service plan will be announced after discussion with the directorate and traders.

The Railway Minister claimed that wagon and freight services of BR have started reaching competitive stage following the services so far introduced for goods and essential items transportation during the coronavirus pandemic period.

He said the farmers, growers and traders especially mango traders have got the benefit of the train service in recent months.

The minister said transportation cost for each animal in train has been assessed between Tk 1500 and Tk 2500 as each wagons of metre gauge trains would be able to transport 16 animals and broad gauge trains 20 animals.
