Infections among health workers top 5,000 mark

The number of infections among the frontline health workers in the war against the coronavirus pandemic topped 5,000 in the country, according to Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), the apex body of physicians.

BMA in a statement on Sunday said that at least 62 physicians died of COVID-19 since the first physician died from the coronavirus infection on April 15.

Besides, some 5,001 health workers, including 1,725 physicians, 1,351 nurses and 1,925 other health staffers were infected with coronavirus across the country.

Many of them recovered and joined the services again, the statement added.

However, the statement could not confirm how many health workers made the recovery since the first virus case was detected on March 8.

The media statement, signed by BMA President Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr Md Ehteshamul Huq Choudhury, expressed their condolences over the demise of physicians who made their mark during the pandemic.
