Govt plans to extend shutdown until May 5

The government may extend the nationwide shutdown of offices and workplaces until May 5 amid a worsening coronavirus outbreak, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain has said.

A formal notice announcing the extension will be published on Thursday, he said, reports bdnews24.com.

"The notice may outline fresh directives,” the state minister added.

On March 23, the government declared general holidays from March 26 to April 4, aiming to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.

Later, the holidays were extended four times until April 25 -– first from April 5 to April 9, then from April 10 to April 14, later from April 15 to April 16 and finally from April 17 to April 25.

Earlier, the government closed all the academic institutions apart from shutting down rail, road, river and air communications to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus.

Bangladesh registered 10 more deaths from the coronavirus in the 24 hours to 8am Wednesday, raising the count to 120.

Another 390 people tested positive for virus from 3,096 samples in the same period as the tally of confirmed cases surged to 3,772.
