Former FM’s aide sued for siphoning Tk 26m!

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against a former official of the Bangladesh High Commission in Canada.

Case against the official in question Maksud Khan was filed on allegations of having embezzled Tk 26 millions.

Deputy director of ACC Mahbubul Alam has been appointed as the investigation officer of the case.

He said the case against Maksud was lodged with the Shahbagh Police Station.
The case statement reveals that Maksud siphoned off the amount, equivalent to almost $415,000 (Canadian) from government-allocated fund for the Machine Readable Passport (MRP) project.
In what certainly sounds like a colourful career, Maksud was also assistant private secretary to Dr Dipu Moni, when she served as foreign minister (FM) during the Awami League-led alliance's previous term.

Playing up his own proximity to an important member of the cabinet, Maksud took cash from innumerable Bangladeshis living abroad, in exchange promising each of them a hassle-free shift from the old passport book to the MRP, thanks to his influence.
Dipu Moni's knowledge of the malpractices Maksud was engaged in would seem to have been sketchy at best.

According to UNB, ACC approved for filing a case against him earlier on December 11, 2017.
