EC distributes mayoral symbols for Rangpur polls

Seven candidates, three from the major political parties, will vie for mayoral post in Rangpur City Corporation polls to take place in December 1.

The three political affiliated candidates are Awami League contestant Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, Jatiya Party contender Mostafizur Rahman, BNP candidate Kawsar Jahan Babla.

Independent candidate Hossain Makbul Shahriar will also vie for mayoral post in Rangpur city polls, as per a UNB report.

Besides, Islami Andolan Bangladesh contender ATM Golam Mostafa, BSD's Abdul Kuddus and NPP's Selim Akhter will also contest in the polls for the post of mayor in RCC. 

Moreover, 211 for 33 general councillor posts and 65 for 11 reserved councillor seats are contesting in the polls, according to the EC Secretariat's factsheet.

A total of 306 aspirants had submitted their nomination papers against the 45 posts.

However, 13 nomination papers were cancelled during scrutiny while 10 councillor candidates withdrew their candidature within the deadline that expired on Sunday.

The official electioneering also began on Monday with the distribution of election symbols among the 283 candidates.
