Depression over Bay makes landfall, more rainfall likely

Bangladesh has experienced heavy rains since Thursday due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal that crossed Khulna and India’s West Bengal coast between 12 noon and 6pm on Friday, according to a special weather bulletin.

It said due to the presence of the land depression, ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall is likely to occur in Chattogram, Barishal, Khulna, Dhaka, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Rangpur regions.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 44 kilometres of the land depression centre – Faridpur-Madaripur and adjoining areas – is about 40 km per hour rising to 50 km with gust, said the bulletin issued by the Dhaka Met office in the evening.

“South-west monsoon has withdrawn from north-western part of Bangladesh and conditions are favourable for further withdrawal from remaining part of Bangladesh,” read the bulletin.

Sea is likely to remain rough. Accordingly, all fishing boats and trawlers have been advised to remain in shelter and not to venture into the deep sea until further notice.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been asked to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.

The Met office recorded 169mm rainfall in Barishal, 153mm in Bhola, 140 mm in Chandpur, 135 mm in Chattogram, 109 mm in Patuakhali, 102mm in Mongla, 101 mm in Kutubdia, 58mm in Madaripur and 54mm rainfall in Dhaka in the past 24 hours till 6pm Friday.

“Monsoon is strong over North Bay,” said the bulletin forecasting rainfall all over Bangladesh.

It added that the day’s temperature might rise slightly and night temperature may fall by 1-3 degree Celsius over the next 24 hours beginning 6pm Friday.
