HC reduces three rape convicts’ death penalty

The High Court reduced death sentences of three people to life term in a rape case of a health worker of BRAC in 2005.

Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam announced the verdict on Tuesday on hearing death references and convicts’ appeals.

The convicts are Md Shafi Alam, Md Kalu and Abul Hossain. Kalu is absconding while the rest are in prison, reports bdnews24.com.

Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah, who represented State, said, “The reason behind court’s decision will be known after the full verdict is published. Prime suspect Shafi Alam has been in jail for the last 10 years.”

As per the case dossier, the three convicts took turns to rape the 30-year-old victim at Chittagong’s Banshkhali Upazila on Jun 12, 2005. The victim sued the three a day later.

Police pressed charges in court against them on August 21 that year. The court framed charges against them on Jun 5, 2013.

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of Chittagong handed down death sentences to the three on Jan 5, 2015.
