Customs officials nab two gold smugglers at Dhaka Airport

Customs officials arrested an Aviation Security Force (Avsec) member and a passenger from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday night for their involvement in gold smuggling.

The arrestees are Md Shariful Islam, a member of the security team hailing from Ghatail in Tangail district, and Md Yakub Miah.

Based on tip-off, separate teams of Customs House, Customs Preventive Team and customs officials detained the suspects, said Customs House Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury.

Md Yakub Miah was charged after boarding off from a Saudi Airlines flight (SV-804) at around 9:00 pm and five gold bars were found hidden inside his body.

The gold bars weighing 580 grams in total are worth Tk 2.9 million, UNB reported.

Detaining Yakub and searching his mobile phone, the team found clues about Shariful and went after him.

Sensing danger, Shariful tried to flee from the airport but was caught eventually.
