Veg prices soaring for shortage of supply in Joypurhat, Gopalganj

Prices of vegetables have been soaring in the local kitchen markets of the district for the last couple of weeks due to supply shortage.

Sub-assistance agri-officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Azirar Rahman said vegetable prices are increasing due to inadequate supply.  Farmers could not able to produce sufficient amount of vegetable due to recent flood situation in the area.

The official expressed the hope that the market rate will be dropped down after the harvest of the early winter vegetables.

In a recent visit this correspondent found that bitter gourd is being sold at Tk 40 to 50 per kg, bottle gourd at Tk 30 to Tk 40 a piece, okra at Tk 40 to Tk 45 a kg, papaya at Tk 30 to Tk 35 a kg, cucumber at Tk 50 to Tk 60 a kg and tomato at Tk 100 to Tk120 a kg. 

Besides, green chilli is being sold at Tk 100 to Tk 140 per kg.

Our Gopalganj correspondent adds: Prices of varieties of vegetables have shot up in the local markets of the district.

One kg of potato is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 32, brinjal at Tk 60 to Tk 65 and green chilli is being sold at Tk 200 to Tk 220.

One kg of pointed gourd is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 45 and a piece of bottle gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 55.

Okra is being sold at Tk 70 to Tk 75 per kg and papaya at Tk 30 to Tk 35 in local market.

One kg of arum is being selling at Tk 30 to Tk 35 which was Tk 20 to Tk 22 earlier. Snake gourd is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 45 now a days.

Local traders said shortage of supply is the main reason of such price hike. They urged the authority concerned to monitor the market properly.
