 ‘UP chairman’ shoots dead farmer over land dispute

A farmer was gunned down, allegedly by a union parishad chairman, at Kuttamara of Nalitabari upazila in Sherpur on Thursday over land dispute.

The deceased was identified as Idris Ali, 26, son of Fazlur Rahman of the village in Jogania union.

Md Abul Khayer, officer-in-charge of Nalitabari Police Station, said that Jogania UP Chairman Habibur Rahman was at loggerheads with one Sorhab Ali of the village over ownership of a plot.

Their supporters clashed around 9:00am. At one stage, Habibur opened fire, hitting Idris' throat. Another youth Rubel Mia also sustained bullet injuries.

They were taken to Nalitabari Upazila Hospital, but Idris succumbed to his injuries around 1:00pm, said the OC.

Police said they are trying to arrest the UP chairman, reports UNB.
