Miscreants shot dead UZ chairman in Rangamati

The chairman of Naniarchar upazila parishad was shot to death by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila parishad complex on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Shaktiman Chakma, 55, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction).

Md Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Naniarchar Police Station, said a group of criminals swooped on Shaktiman around 10:30am as soon as he got down from his vehicle in front of the upazila parishad complex to enter the office.

The assailants opened fire on him, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he was taken to Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctor declared him dead.

The victim's assistant, Rupam Chakma, was also injured in the attack, the OC said, adding that they were yet to know the motive behind the killing.

Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader directed the police super of Rangamati to take the murder incident seriously and find out the killers.
