Ishwardi growers happy over fair  price of off-season cauliflower


PABNA, Sept 17: Farmers in Ishwardi upazila here are very happy over excellent yield of early variety of off-season cauliflower this season with fair market prices of their produce. Now per maund cauliflowers being sold at Tk 2,800 to 3,200 in different markets of the upazila.
As a result, the farmers here are becoming more interested in cauliflower cultivation due to its less cultivation cost compared to other crops.
The vegetable has great demand among customers, and its cultivation has proved benefiting for the growers.
According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Ishwadi upazila, the target of off-season cauliflower cultivation was set at 820 hectares of land, but around 740 hectares of land under 7 unions in the upazila have been brought under its cultivation. The cauliflower produced here is being supplied to different districts including the capital everyday after meeting the local demand, sources added.
While talking to The Financial Express, Shahzahan Ali, a cauliflower grower of Joynagar village, said he cultivated off season cauliflower on around two bighas of land in previous year and having fair price with bumper cauliflower production. He cultivated three bighas of land this year and got more profit than the previous year. He would cultivate off-season in the next year, he hoped.
Hyder Ali, another farmer of Dikshir village, said that he cultivated two bighas of land in this season. He has got a bumper off-season cauliflower production with fair market price. Now per maund cauliflower is being sold at Tk 2,800 to 3,200 in locals markets, he added.
Amod Ali Mia, farmer of Aowtapara village under the Ishardi upazila said that he cultivated one bigha of land this season. Meanwhile, he has already sold 436 maunds of cauliflower. He has got double of his production cost and become self-reliant. He would cultivate cauliflower in the next year as well, he added.
Moyez Uddin, a farmer of Joynagar village, said he cultivated cauliflower on one bigha of land this year and got a bumper production. In this connection he had to spend less, and now, he has become self-reliant.
In this way, many farmers of Pakshy union, Shahpur union, Selimpur union, Muladuli union, Maniknagar union, area cultivated early cauliflower and became benefited this year.
Ishwardi upazila Agriculture officer Rowshan Zaman said the farmers have become very interested in cultivating off-season cauliflower on their lands as they have been getting bumper yield for the last few years.
