Fishermen are fishing in the Chitra River by illegally putting up enclosures, which result in disrupting the normal flow of the river in Jashore.

Such illegal activity has been going on for so long with little action from the authorities concerned against it, locals allege.

To justify the allegation, they point to an illegal enclosure constructed by fishermen just 200 yards away from the Bagharpara fisheries office.

Moreover, fishermen use current nets while fishing in the river and other kind of water bodies, drastically reducing the fish population in the district, they add.

The fish sanctuary in Bagharpara town area is also about to disappear due to random fishing by some locals, they point out.

Asked, Bagharpara Upazila Fisheries Officer Palash Bala says they conduct a regular eviction drive along the river.

As for theillegal fish enclosure near the office she says, “I am not aware of any enclosure in the river. If it is true, action will be taken soon.”
