Housewife killed over nose ring dowry

A housewife was beaten and strangulated to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws as her family failed to meet a dowry demand for a nose ring.

The incident took place in Kholahati village of Gaibandha Sadar upazila around noon.

Police said the deceased Sumaiya Aktar, wife of Suja Mia of Kholahati village, was the daughter of Shahin Mia.

Shahin said the couple got married last year and that he gave cash money and other materials as dowry.

“We failed to give only a nose ring that was also demanded as dowry,” he said adding that Sumaiya’s in-laws have been torturing her for this for a long time.

Locals said the argument started at 11am over the nose ring and after some time they beat up and strangulated her to death and fled. Later, villagers informed police.

The body was sent to Gaibandha Hospital for an autopsy, said Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station C Khan Mohammad Shahriar.

No arrest has been made yet. It is unclear if any case has been filed over the death.

The practice of dowry is common in Bangladesh, particularly in rural areas. There have been a lot of incidents where the bride is tortured and sometimes killed for dowry, reports UNB.
