Flood-hit poor and marginal farmers have got a cash incentive of more than Tk 153 million under an agricultural rehabilitation programme in four districts of Sylhet division.

A total of 17,848 farmers received Tk 153.68 million altogether, said Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid, deputy director at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)’s Sylhet divisional office on Monday.

Of the incentive in cash, Tk 4.738 million was doled out in Sylhet district, Tk 4.305 million in Moulvibazar, Tk 2.021 million in Habiganj and Tk 4.305 million in Sunamganj district, he said.

According to the DAE deputy director, 1100 farmers received the incentive for growing maize, 17,000 for mustard and 48 for BT brinjal.

The special programme is meant for recouping the damage caused by recent floods the farmers faced in four districts in the region.

District and upazila committees were entrusted with the implementation of the special programme that also includes seeds and fertilisers.

Each listed farmer received the incentive in kind— seed, fertiliser – as well as a cash amount for land preparing and others.

A maize farmer got two kg seed, 20 kg Di Ammonia phosphate (DAP) fertilisers and 10 kg Murate of Potash (MOP).

To cultivate mustard, 17,000 farmers received one kg seed, 20 kg DAP and 10 kg MOP and other assistance.

It covers 5,000 farmers in the districts of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj each while 2,000 in the district of Habiganj.

Twelve selected farmers in each of the three districts received two kg seeds of BT brinjal and 15 kg DAP and 15 kg MOP.

Moreover, 800 other farmers would receive the incentive in kind – five kg seed and 10 kg DAP and MOP – in the upcoming season.
