Fish cultivation expanding in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, June 13: Fish cultivation is gaining popularity in the district.

A good number of unemployment youth of across Kalai, Akkelpur, Pachbibi, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas are now engaged with the farming.

Most of them are now self-reliant.

Local offices of the Fisheries Department provided all sorts of support to the farmers.

They also arranged seminars on fish cultivation to expand the farming.

Ruhi, katla, silver carp, cat fishes, pabda, koi, shing and other indigenous fishes are being cultivated across the area.

Ruhi and Katla are selling at Tk 200 to Tk 250 per kg, silver carp and carfo is at Tk 100 to Tk 130, cat fish, pabda and koi at Tk 300 to Tk 500 according to sizes and quality.

Some fish cultivators told this correspondent that they need more training facilities.

They also urged the government to arrange easy-term loan facilities for them.

District fisheries official said fish farming is profitable.

Hundreds of unemployed youth of the district have improved their financial condition by fish cultivation.

"Fish farmers are provided all sorts of support to boost production", the official added.
