BOGRA, Oct 31: Over 8,000 female labourers from different remote villages of the district have attained self-reliance by working at the jute mills over the last few years.

Source said a total of 15 jute mills have been set up since 2005 after the closure of the Adamjee Jute Mills in the region to supply the sack. Now, the factories are crowded with male and female day labourers.

The people who struggle with acute poverty last few year back have attained financial solvency doing the job, said a labourer Rashida Begum at Shabgram Akash Tara Jute Mills of the town. She can make over Tk 400 to Tk 500 daily by doing the job.

"The noted jute mills were set up in the region 12 year back with the broken parts of the Adamjee Jute Mills," said aged mechanic of Progaty Jute Mills in Thengamara area. He also said, "Now the factory is able of producing over 7.0  million pieces of sack every year."

Female day labourers work at Akash Tara Jute Mills at Shabgram, Progati Agro Jute Mills at Thengamara, Hasan Jute Mills at Silimpur, Mohony Nabil Jute  Mills at Bonany, Azad Bangldesh Jute Mills at Jhopgari, Karatoa Jute Mills at Sadar, Shah Sultan Jute Mills at Chalkbochai of Gabtoly upazila and  Mili Jute Mills at Kahaloo upazila with a satisfactory salary spending eight hours everyday.

Managing director of Karatoa Jute Mills said, "We are happy as we employed a good number of ultra-poor female labourers. "We need government support to run the business well," he added.

Former chairmen of the Bogra Chamber Of Commerce and Industry Momtaj Uddin said many jute mills were established across the district as the farmers grow more jute.

If the authority concerned expands their hands for the betterment of the industry, jute growers, labourers and mill owners would be mostly benefited, he added.
