Cabinet okays CDA, KDA Bills

‘Govt may import 2m mt of food grains’

The Cabinet on Monday approved the drafts of ‘The Chittagong Development Authority Bill, 2017’ and ‘The Khulna Development Authority Bill, 2017’ to make the existing laws more time-befitting and ensure planned development of the cities.

 

 

 

The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at the Prime Minister's Office with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, reports UNB.

 

 

 

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said some changes have been brought to the structure of the existing boards of the two Development Authorities.

 

 

 

As per the new draft laws, there will be some common features in the two boards like having a chairman in each, and four full-time members in each of the two boards in addition to incorporating the post of member secretary in both the boards.

 

 

 

Besides, the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong will be a member of the CDA Board while the Deputy Commissioners of Khulna, Jessore and Bagerhat will be the KDA Board members, he said.

 

 

 

In case of the CDA board, Shafiul Alam said, the Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, the Chief Engineer of the CDA, Managing the Director of Chittagong WASA, representatives from the Bangladesh Railways Eastern Zone, Chittagong Sea Port Authority, two councillors of Chittagong City Corporation nominated by the City Mayor will be its members.

 

 

 

Besides, there will be one representative each from the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, and Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the CDA Board while four eminent citizens will be appointed by the government as its members, he said.

 

 

 

About Khulna Development Authority, the Cabinet Secretary said representatives from the Mongla Port, Noapara Municipality, Ministry of Land and the Department of Architecture and three eminent citizens to be appointed by the government will remain there in the KDA Board in addition to other members.

 

 

 

Answering to a question, the Cabinet Secretary said the government may need to import around 2 million metric tonnes of food grains, including 1.5 million metric tons rice, from abroad by January next.
