Bhasan Char gets police station

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday formally opened the newly-built Bhasan Char Police Station in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali.

Noakhali's police chief Md Alamgir Hossain presided over the inaugural function, reports UNB.

Noakhali-6 MP Ayesha Ferdous, Public Security Division Senior Secretary Mostafa Kamal Uddin, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and Secretary of Security Services Division Md Shahiduzzaman were present as special guests.

Besides, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Maj Gen Md Shafeenul Islam, DIG of Chattogram Range Md Anwar Hossain, Noakhali Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Khorshed Alam Khan, Project Director of Bhasanchar Asrayan Project-3 Commodore Abdullah Al Mamun Chowdhury, senior officials of Home Ministry, district police and other police units were also present on the occasion.

The government invested more than $350 million to develop the 13,000 acres island and provide all modern amenities, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas in cramped camps in Cox's Bazar. Most of them came here after the Myanmar military launched a brutal offensive targeting the mainly-Muslim ethnic minority in the pretext of a 'clearance operation' in 2017.

The presence of a huge number of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals put severe pressure on Bangladesh's coastal district Cox's Bazar and put them on a collision course with the locals. Many Rohingyas have become involved in crimes.

Bangladesh has been urging the global community to mount pressure on Myanmar for effective repatriation of the Rohingyas.

The government plans to shift some 100,000 Rohingyas to Bhasan Char in phases.

Currently, 3,762 Rohingyas are living in Bhasan Char. The newly-built police station will make it possible to ensure the overall law and order situation including their security provisions.
