The government will stamp the people returning from abroad through land, water and airports, aiming at their quarantine at home or any other specified places.

Planning minister MA Mannan spoke on Thursday of health ministry's decision to spot the returnees with stamping on their hands, aimed at checking spread of the virus.

"Stamping on hands will be visible to everybody of the country. In that case, the returnees can't move anywhere to avoid home quarantine," he said.

Mr Mannan was talking to the media following a National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in the capital.

He said the heath minster at the meeting discussed the start of stamping on hands soon.

Following indiscriminate trips by Bangladeshis who have recently returned from outside, Mr Mannan said this is an innovative idea to identify corona-infected people.

"It will help us to put them into the self-quarantine at their own homes."

Thousands of Bangladeshis have returned home over the past few weeks from the most vulnerable China, Italy, Germany, Spain, France and Middle-Eastern countries.

The government claimed it had allowed them to go home on humanitarian grounds, suggesting home quarantine.

However, the returnees are not complying with the quarantine regulations and playing truant.
