15 Rohingyas die as Malaysia-bound trawler sinks in Bay

At least 15 Rohingya people -- 12 women and three children -- have died while going to Malaysia illegally as a trawler carrying them aboard sank near the Saint Martin’s island in the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday.

Members of Coast Guard and Navy retrieved the bodies of the dead and rescued 73 people -- 24 men, 46 women and three children -- alive during a joint rescue operation at 7:00am, UNB reported quoting Lt Commander M Hamidul Islam, media officer, Coast Guard’s Dhaka Head Office.

Two trawlers left Teknaf’s Monakhali area for Malaysia with over 250 Rohingya people at 8:00pm on Monday, he said.

One of the trawlers sank near 3-4 km off the Saint Martin’s Island while the other could not be traced yet, the coastguard media officer added.

Bangladesh Navy's ships 'BNS Durjoy' and 'BNS Karatoya', and Coast Guard’s ship 'CGS Mansoor Ali' joined the rescue operation.
