Police arrested 12 people while gambling at a place in port city’s Kazir Deuri area on Tuesday night.
Those arrestees were identified as Abul Hossain, 34, Zahid, 35, Shipon, 30, Shahjahan, 39, Didarul Alam, 35, Elias Khan Manik, 35, Monir Hossain, 34, Sohel, 32, Saidul Islam Sumon, 20, Nasir Mia, 35, Makbul Hossain, 30, and MD Selim, 42.
Tipped off, police raided the office of district unit construction workers' union and arrested them while gambling at night, said Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
Police also recovered materials used for gambling and Tk 62,000 from their possession.
A case was filed in this connection, according to a news agency report.
On February 10, the High Court declared illegal all sorts of gambling in exchange of money across the country and directed the government to take steps against organisers of gambling and gamblers.
