District-level hospitals to get ICU: Minister

The government will introduce ICU (intensive care unit) at zila sadar hospitals across the country aiming to ensure better medical treatment to marginal people.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque gave the information at the parliament on Sunday while replying a tabled question placed by independent lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam (Laxmipur-2), reports BSS.

“The government has planned to increase the beds of ICUs of all important hospitals, including all medical colleges,” he said.

To this end, Maleque said, activities of the increase of ICU beds continue considering the priority and space of the hospitals.

Responding another tabled question placed by treasury bench lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Shimul (Natore-2), the health minister said the government is considering setting up burn unit at district-level hospitals.

Meanwhile, another report says, the health minister informed that the users of family planning methods in the country are expected to be increased to 75 per cent by 2022 from existing 62.4 per cent.

“The fertility rate in the country was 6.91 per cent and the users of family planning methods were 7.7 per cent during 1970 to 1975. Now the fertility rate declined to 2.05 per cent, while the users of family planning methods went up to 62.4 per cent,” he said.

Noting that the government is implementing different family planning programmes to control birth rate, Maleque said it will be possible to bring down fertility rate to 2 per cent from existing 2.05.

A total of 30,000 satellite clinics are being arranged per months across the country and each of 45,000 family welfare assistants holds one courtyard meeting with locals every month to reach the family welfare services and messages at the doorsteps of the people and encourage them for small family, the minister said.
