Public lecture by Prof Dr Mizan R Khan held at North South University

Professor Dr Mizan R Khan, Deputy Director of the Bangladesh’s International Centre for Climate Change and Development, yesterday gave a public lecture at North South University.

He gave the public lecture, sponsored by the Office of Research-NSU and the School of Health and Life Sciences, on Thursday, according to a press release.

Also the director of the Least Developed Countries University Consortium on Climate Change, Prof Khan addressed the audience of mostly environmental science and management students on the topic of environment and climate change education.

The question at issue for Dr. Khan is whether tertiary institutions of higher education in particular reflect the need of the day to improve ecological literacy of Bangladeshi students.

Professor Khan, who recently returned from the 27th Conference of Parties meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Egypt, argued for more attention to broad-based coursework on environment and climate change at Bangladesh universities, including having students develop skills in environmental ethics as a balance to the economics of growth, insofar as the latter all too often depreciates the issue of the fragile carrying capacity of the planet.

Prof Dr. Norman K. Swazo, Director, Office of Research-NSU and Professor of Philosophy in the Department of History and Philosophy, gave the introductory welcome.

Prof Dr. Hasan Mahmud Reza, Dean, School of Health and Life Sciences and Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, provided the vote of thanks.
