Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad holds preliminary round

The preliminary round of Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad, supported by the Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited, was held in eleven centres of seven divisions of the country.

Top 20 participants rewarded for the preliminary round of the the 8th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad-2017, held from 10:00am to 11:00 am on Friday.

A total of 13,500 students of HSC and A-Level from different part of the country participated in the examination, according to a press release.

The divisional centres are: Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), University of Chittagong, Comilla University, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University, Begum Rokeya University, Pabna University of Science and Technology, University of Rajshahi, University of Barisal and Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).

Dhaka divisional centre, BUET, hosted 850 participants from different institutions.

Prof Abdul Mannan, chairman of chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC), inaugurated the function.

The programme started with the opening announcement by Dr Md Shakhawat Hossain Firoz, professor of chemistry department of BUET, and also the convener of Dhaka divisional centre of the Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad.

Prof Dr Saiful Islam, vice-chancellor of BUET, and Prof Dr Yusuf Ali Mollah, member of the UGC, were present at the competition as special guests.

Dipta Akash Biswas from Notre Dame College secured 1st position, while Anik Mojumder of Dhaka Residential Model College and Tasnin Alam Subah of Udayan College were placed the 2nd and 3rd position respectively.

The final round of the 8th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad-2017 will be held in BUET on 16 February, 2018, where the selected candidates from 11 centres will participate.
