Tax collection in fairs rises 11.35pc

The week-long income tax-fairs, which concluded on Monday, collected Tk 24.68 billion in taxes.

The collection from this year’s taxes is 11.35 per cent more than that of the previous year’s fairs.

Submission of income tax returns also jumped by 45 per cent this year.

On the last day, tax-fairs took place at a total of 45 spots, including eight divisional headquarters.

While speaking at the concluding ceremony at Officers Club premises in the capital, National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan gave the detailed information on taxpayers’ response in this year’s fairs.

He instructed tax officials to extend similar cooperation, like in the tax-fairs, to taxpayers in the tax offices.

“A total of 1.6 million people obtained different types of services from the tax-fairs in the last seven days, which is up by 40 per cent compared to that of the previous year.”

Some 39,743 taxpayers obtained Taxpayer’s Identification Number (TIN) from the tax-fairs, he also said.

Of the total tax-returns, some 3,770 taxpayers submitted their tax returns online.

Moreover, some 1,160 taxpayers paid tax worth Tk 14 million using e-payment portal.

The NBR chairman also opined that tax-net should be widened by collecting information of people of well-off sections of the society.

“There are some large businesses, which are paying poor amount of tax. We will intensify efforts to make them compliant.”

He also said active presence of young generation and women in the tax-fairs made the NBR’s efforts successful.

NBR members (income tax) Ziauddin Mahmood and Kalipada Haldar along with the commissioners of Income Tax Wing were present in the concluding ceremony.

On the last day, there was huge rush of taxpayers, even after the visiting hour.

Talking to the FE, many of the taxpayers demanded time extension of the tax-fairs to submit their tax returns.

They claimed that they have to spend additional amount beyond payable tax, if they visit the tax offices for submitting returns.

The last date for submission of tax returns by individual taxpayers is November 30.
