Directors destroyed Farmers Bank, Sylhet to get flyover: Muhith

The Finance Minister has said that the directors of The Farmers Bank Limited have destroyed the bank by way of looting.

According to Mr AMA Muhith, "It's the directors who destroyed The Farmers Bank by plundering money but there's no apprehension that the bank will be shut down."

The minister was talking to the journalists on Thursday after inaugurating the 43rd branch of Bangladesh Development Bank Limited at Islampur in Sylhet city.

When asked that the customers are not getting their deposits back from the cash-strapped private sector bank, he said Bangladesh Bank (BB) as the central bank has been supervising the matter.

"They'll take the decision over the matter and appoint the administrator," he added.

Muhith later inaugurated a divider road at Rikabibazar area in the city, report UNB and BSS.

While inaugurating, he said the government will construct a flyover in Sylhet city with an aim to ensure a smooth and hassle-free movement for the dwellers.

"The residents of Dhaka and Chittagong are getting the benefit of the flyovers as traffic jam has been reduced remarkably in the two major cities," Muhith said.

It will save time while the country's economy will get a boost once the traffic congestion comes to a tolerable level, he added.

He said the main aim of the present government is to ensure welfare of the people. The government's steps for the development of communication system and infrastructures have been appreciated by all, he said, adding that continuation of these efforts will help the country achieve progress fast.

The 55-feet width divider road has been constructed by Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) at a cost of Taka 40.2 million at Rikabibazar. Expansion of this road - Freedom Fighter Dr Chanchal Road- will help ease traffic jam in Sylhet city.

SCC mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury, former Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Dr AK Abdul Momen, deputy commissioner of Sylhet Md Rahat Anwar, city Awami League general secretary Asad Uddin Ahmad and Sadar upazila parishad chairman Ashfaque Ahmad, among others, were present.
