Finance minister disproves CPD statement terming it ‘rubbish’

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith came down heavily on Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) saying it never recognised the country's achievements.

On Sunday, he also labelled the local think-tank’s view on national economy as ‘rubbish.’

The remarks were made by the senior minister while he was talking about the CPD observations made on Saturday regarding the economy.

The journalists drew his attention to CPD’s evaluation after he emerged from a meeting with the leaders of the Dhaka Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) at the finance ministry.

In reply, the minister branded CPD's statement as rubbish as saying "No, no, no...It's all rubbish. I have no comment."

Criticising the CPD, the Finance Minister said they uttered not a single word when the biggest scam (Sonali Bank’s Hall Mark loan disbursement) took place.

"Actually, CPD is busy undermining the achievements in the field of economy," he said.

In its observations the previous day, CPD termed the year 2017 as the year of banking scam citing a series of scams took place in the country in the just-past year.

The leading think-tank said these scams are the result of the finance ministry's lack of monitoring, according to UNB.

The research body believed the scams have a very negative impact on the overall economy and apprehend the banking sector will not be relived from such crisis soon because of the government's inaction.
