A man and his wife, both snake handlers, died after being bitten by snakes in Satkhira on Friday.

The snake charmer couple was identified as Ekhlas Khan, 32, and Alima Khatun, 28. They are from Kaliganj upazila of Jashore, reports UNB.

Locals said members of the Bede community set up tents at Hatkhola Bazar in the Sadar upazila recently. The couple was bitten at dawn while they were sleeping.

Snake charmers of Bede community initially tried to save the couple using their “traditional methods”, but when it didn't work out, they were taken to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Doctors recommended shifting Alima to Khulna Sadar Hospital for better treatment. She died while being taken there, said Satkhira Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Shaheen. “Ekhlas later died at Satkhira Sadar Hospital.”
