Rangpur polls not to affect parliament election: Muhith

The result of Rangpur City Corporation mayoral election will not have any effect on the next parliamentary polls, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has said.

“City corporation election is a local government election. It has nothing to do with the national parliament elections,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while replying to reporters’ queries after inaugurating the Insurance Fair in Sylhet on Friday.

He also said the Rangpur city polls have proved that the election system in Bangladesh is neutral.

“As there are many political parties in Bangladesh, it is natural for them to win in parts of the country. This election has proved the neutrality of the country’s election system,” he said.

The Rangpur City Corporation polls was held on Thursday.

According to UNB, Jatiya Party candidate Mostafizur Rahman won in the election defeating his nearest rival Awami League contender Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu by a huge margin.

According to the unofficial results, Mostafiz bagged 1,60,489 votes while Jhantu polled 62,400 and BNP candidate Kawsar Jahan Babla got only 35,136 votes.
