Sweet potato cultivators expecting bumper output

JOYPURHAT, Dec 17: Due to favourable weather conditions and timely supply of necessary agri-input, sweet potato farmers are expecting a bumper output in the district.
Experts said sweet potato is vitamin-A, C and mineral-enriched.
It is also enriched with protein, carbohydrate, calcium, iron, carotene and vitamin B1 and B2.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the farming had been exceeded as the growers had been provided logistic support.
To make the farming a success, both government and non-government organisations in the area had taken adequate steps, DAE officials added.
Low production cost and easy cultivation process inspired the farmers in five upazilas of the district, said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.
More than 320 peasants of Akkelpur, Panchbibi, Kalai, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas have already been engaged with the farming as its cultivation is proved more lucrative to them.
The farmer can make a net profit of ovwe Tk 30,000 to Tk 50,000 spending Tk 12000 to Tk 15000.
Farmer Sommad Hossain of Akklepur upazila said he cultivated sweet potato on 35 decimals of land this season by spending about Tk 4,800. He is expecting over 20 maunds of yield.
Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindra Nath Roy said DAE set a target of producing around 670 tonnes of sweet potato from some 900 hectares of land this season.
